The 7 Best Italian Rosé Metodo Classico Sparkling Wines Selected by Gambero Rosso

Jan 7 2024, 15:16
Complexity, finesse, and territoriality. Seven rosé sparkling wines to test the significant growth of the Italian Metodo Classico.

The growth of the Italian Metodo Classico is well illustrated by the level achieved by our rosé cuvées. We have gathered 7 sparkling wines that should not be missed, ranging from reserves matured for a long time on lees to more immediate yet equally refined and intricate cuvées. Lombardy throws down the gauntlet with Franciacorta and Oltrepò, TrentoDoc responds, but there is also space for excellent Lambrusco and a gem produced in Puglia. The bottle refermentation fever has spread throughout the Peninsula.

The Best Italian Rosé Metodo Classico Sparkling Wines

Franciacorta Rosé Dosaggio Zero Bagnadore Ris. 2011 - Barone Pizzini

Provaglio d’Iseo (BS)

The first release of the new Rosé from the Pizzini estate is impressive, a product of an outstanding vintage and long aging on lees. Made solely from Pinot Nero grapes from the Roccolo vineyard. It opens up clean and fragrant with hints of pomegranate, watermelon, and a touch of iodine. The palate is rich with contrast, tense and creamy, offering luscious sensations of raspberries meeting almond notes, displaying rhythm and great depth. A very long finish with orange zest. Excellent aging potential.

Franciacorta Rosé Pas Dosé Parosé Riedizione 2023 '07 - Mosnel

Passirano (BS)
90 euros

The Franciacorta Rosé '07 Riedizione '23 is enchanting, challenging to find a cuvée capable of articulating so many aspects in such a light and symphonic context. It presents a carousel of spices, coffee tones, capers, and sun-dried flower notes; the effervescence is intricate, offering different essences and shades, even spicy ones, leading to a subtle and extremely long finish.

OP M. Cl. Pinot Nero Rosé Extra Brut ’20 - Calatroni

Montecalvo Versiggia (PV)
26 euros

Brothers Cristian and Stefan Calatroni lead a rapidly emerging reality among the stars of Italian sparkling wine. NorEma '20 embodies everything expected from a Metodo Classico Pinot Nero in pink. With a pale hue, it exhibits aromatic finesse, distinct fragrance of raspberries and wild strawberries, creaminess guided by fine effervescence and remarkable overall completeness. Delicate, silky, of great class. Unbeatable quality-price ratio.

OP Cruasé Roccapietra '17 Scuropasso – Roccapietra

Pietra de' Giorgi (PV)
25 euros

In this solid Oltrepò Pavese reality, Flavia Marazzi is increasingly closer to her father Fabio in leading the company with determination. Significant strides have been made in Metodo Classico wines, favoring long lees aging. The Cruasé Roccapietra '17 exhibits clear citric hints with grafts of maple and Granny Smith apple, fine bubbles, exceptionally sustained and continuous acidity - truly excellent. Perfect with white meats.

Trento Extra Brut Rosé '18 - Moser

Trento (TN)
32 euros

Francesco Moser, the record-breaking cyclist, accustomed to overtaking opponents at the finish line, has successfully applied the shrewd suggestions of his son Carlo, in synergy with the winemaking choices of his nephew Matteo, one of the most prepared oenologists, to offer a series of highly representative wines. The Rosé made from Pinot Nero grapes is intense and light simultaneously, caressing the palate with splendid gustatory liveliness, finishing on notes of pomegranate and orange zest.

Lambrusco di Sorbara Brut Rosé M. Cl. '18 Cantina della Volta

Bomporto (MO)
25 euros

Christian Bellei is a leading figure in Modena for Metodo Classico sparkling wine production. He creates them using "classic" Pinot Nero and Chardonnay but also incorporates a territorial interpretation with the use of Lambrusco di Sorbara. As demonstrated by the excellent '18 Rosé, it possesses great charm, a complex yet very fine and subtle bouquet, an elegant and graceful palate, profound and savory finish.

Trento Rosé Monsieur Martis Brut '18 - Maso Martis

Martignano (TN)
70 euros

An original and characterful pure Meunier, produced in about 2500 bottles. It displays a barely hinted coppery colour, surprising with its fine and faceted texture. The palate is notably creamy, with a clear floral undertone, a citric trail, and a darker finish in fruit and spices. More enveloping than vertical, it possesses a fascinating rhythm. Aged for 48 months on lees, exclusively in steel.

Chiaromonte Ancestrale Rosé ’18 - Chiaromonte

Acquaviva delle Fonti (BA)
70 euros

We conclude with a variation on the theme. This Pinot Nero from Puglia has enchanted us: 36 months in the bottle, unfiltered, salmon-coloured. The aromas are extremely fragrant, featuring watermelon, violet, and pomegranate, clear and direct. On the palate, it is vibrant, tense, progressive, with a beautiful balsamic undertone. The perlage is delicate, extremely fresh, and elegant. A finish with significant thrust. Nicola Chiaramonte has surpassed himself with this vintage.
