Christian Plattner's Ansitz Waldgries estate is located at the base of the Santa Maddalena hills, where the warmth of the Bolzano basin enjoys the cooler currents flowing through the Isarco valley. Surrounding the operational headquarters are the vineyards for the red grape varieties, Lagrein and Schiava above all (of the latter, the winery is replanting the historical clones, capable of lending greater grit and tension to the sip), while for the white grape varieties, one has to go all the way back to Appiano and Cornaiano: in all, Christian can count on some ten hectares of vineyards. In the cellar, the style is clear, with reds based on fullness of flavour and whites that instead pursue complexity and finesse.
Alto Adige's best value for money wine for the Berebene 2024 guide

The winery is one of the most interesting interpreters of Santa Maddalena, the historic red type from the city's basin. What we are proposing here, A. A. Santa Maddalena Cl. 2022, which won the Regional Prize for Alto Adige in Gambero Rosso's Berebene 2024 guide, is a glass that should be enjoyed chilled, almost like a white wine, and you will discover a truly enthralling way of drinking. The cherry aromas find freshness in the balsamic, mineral and undergrowth notes. In the mouth, the savouriness has the task of holding and governing the taste path.
