The award for the wine with the best quality-price ratio in Piemonte in the Berebene 2024 guide has been given to a Verduno Pelaverga. Here is what it is.

It all began in the second half of the nineteenth century when Commendatore Giovanni Battista Burlotto founded the winery in Verduno. Today, under the guidance of Fabio Alessandria, the cellar has carved out an esteemed position among the realities of Langa. Half of the vineyard, comprising approximately 15 hectares, is dedicated to Nebbiolo, with plots in some of the finest Barolo crus, including Monvigliero, Acclivi, Castelletto, and Cannubi. The second half focuses on other typical Piedmont varieties: Barbera, Dolcetto, Freisa, and the unmistakable Pelaverga. The overarching philosophy revolves around respecting ingredients and terroir, starting from vineyard work and continuing through to winemaking, with the aim of preserving and showcasing the diverse vintages and distinct characteristics of the production soils.

In addition to the previously mentioned Barolos, one cannot claim to have experienced the winery's production without having tasted the irresistible Verduno Pelaverga, which received the Regional Award for Piedmont in the Gambero Rosso's Berebene 2024 guide. Pepper, rose, licorice, and tobacco compose the bouquet of the 2022 vintage, with a palate that's beautifully fresh, yet also complex, dense, and persistent. We recommend serving it at around 15° Celsius to enhance its overwhelming drinkability.
