The Special Red Wine of the Year award for the Vini d'Italia guide this year was given to a Barolo produced by a winery over a century old, relying on vineyards in some of the denomination's most famous crus.

Red Wine of the Year for the Gambero Rosso 2024 Wine Guide

The Red Wine of the Year places an exclamation mark on the "vigna delle vigne," a one-hectare parcel planted in 1947 in Serralunga d'Alba. There must be a reason why the quotes for Vignarionda rise faster than Apple shares: in the glass, we have a gesture of pure and authentic beauty. For us, it's a tribute to Italian wine, created by an extraordinary producer (the Giovanni Rosso winery led by Davide Rosso) and a vintage, the 2019, which we rated top score for Barolo.

The wine is already in amazing shape and will continue to be so in 40 years.

RED WINE OF THE YEAR

Score: 100/100
Barolo Vignarionda Ester Canale Red 2019 - Giovanni Rosso

Over a century of history for this Serralunga d'Alba winery, led for 20 years by Davide Rosso, which relies on vineyards in some of Barolo's most famous crus, including Vignarionda. Objective: wines that tell the territory without filters, seeking maximum expressiveness, aromatic clarity, structure, and an elegant tannic texture. Vinification follows the traditional style with large oak barrels for long ageing. This Barolo has pleased everyone. The aromas are symphonic and refined, from rose to licorice, enhanced by balsamic essences and floral backgrounds. The palate is disarming in its progression and depth. It has an accelerating rhythm, without shouting, it tells a world of fruits and spices, delineated by a masterful tannic structure and a savoury texture. It is the Red Wine of the Year of this edition. And ahead of it lies at least 30 years of pure glory.

The wine ratings were given by the curators of the Vini d'Italia guide, Giuseppe Carrus, Gianni Fabrizio, and Marco Sabellico, and by the deputy curators William Pregentelli and Lorenzo Ruggeri.
