What emerges from the Vini d’Italia 2026 Guide by Gambero Rosso is a territory in constant ascent, starting with sparkling wines, which here can boast a unique terroir, but excellent results also come from still wines

A single province, that of Trento, a single wine region for us, given its conformation and its main Denominations: Trentino in reference to still wines, Trento when considering Metodo Classico, which can rely on a terroir completely different from other Italian sparkling areas.

The great Metodo Classico wines of Trentino

Let’s start with the objectivity of the numbers: no fewer than eight Metodo Classico have reached the top, but in total almost thirty wines reached the final tasting stages. What emerges is not only purely organoleptic quality, which delights our senses with colour, aromas and flavour, but something that expresses so much in terms of authenticity when compared to the territory. The main grapes from which the cuvées are obtained are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but here what stands out are the Dolomitic soils and the significant altitudes of the vineyards. It is no coincidence that they are called Mountain Bubbles.

The new entries

Among these we mention some absolute novelties, alongside prestigious maisons of the type that have already accustomed us to extraordinary products. One is the Trento Brut 1673 ’20 by Cesarini Sforza, a historic estate capable of surprising both with its selections and its more ordinary sparkling wines. Another historic estate is Pisoni, presenting a great Trento Extra Brut Blanc de Noir ’21. Finally, among the novelties, we award the Trento Extra Brut Le Général Dallemagne Riserva ’19, a super selection by Monfort of the Simoni family, who had already offered us excellent cuvées as well as great still wines with Maso Cantanghel.

The great still red and white wines of Trentino

Speaking of still wines, let no one think that Trentino is a land devoted only to sparkling wines. One of the great varieties is Teroldego, which in the Rotaliana plain gives life to truly complex, deep reds with smooth and gratifying drinkability. Two wines are awarded in this category while, remaining among the reds, Pinot Noir (already mentioned for sparkling wines) also finds its beautiful dimension among still wines.
Among the whites we highlight the quality of some great Nosiola, produced both in fresh, vintage versions, and in more complex versions released several years after harvest, showing themselves to be long-ageing wines. Not forgetting the great Vino Santo, produced with the same variety, the star of the Valle dei Laghi. Other varieties to keep an eye on are Müller Thurgau and Riesling – regarding the latter, one only needs to taste the one signed by Pojer & Sandri to understand.

A final note goes to San Leonardo from the estate of the same name, last year awarded the Special Prize Winery of the Year. We tasted a very particular 2020: fine, elegant, complex despite its “mere” 12.5% alcohol. Proof that great wines can still be born even while staying below the alcohol levels we have now become accustomed to.
