There are places that make bread with sea water, those who specialise in taralli (the Neapolitan kind made with suet, pepper and whole almonds) and those who focus on more modern breads. Here are the 4 best bakeries in Naples according to the Pane e Panettieri 2024 guide

In our latest “Pane e Panettieri d’Italia”(Bread and Bakers of Italy guide) guide, in Naples four bakeries emerged, from the one specialising in taralli, Neapolitan of course, to the place that focuses on special or large bread types. There is something for everyone.

The best bakeries in Naples

Antica Forneria Molettieri

Since 1959, the Molettieri family has dedicated itself to bread in this bakery on the slopes of the Vomero. At the head of the laboratory is Rodolfo who incessantly researches and experiments, drawing on recipes borrowed from history (especially Neapolitan history) of which he is a great connoisseur. An example is the nishiki rice bread made with seawater, agricultural flours and boiled rice and sold in bamboo boats; also surprising are the breads made with ancestral yeasts, or obtained by infusion (such as the white fir breadsticks). Appreciated are the corn or chickpea and lentil puffs. No less rich is the dessert front presided over by sister Barbara (the apple pie is not to be missed). The gastronomy provides an assortment of proposals inspired by Neapolitan cuisine and is entrusted to brother Marcello, a long-time cook. Excellent festivity specialities.

Foorn

The flagship branch is located in Mariglianella, but the story does not change. The bread, in the 600-gram loaf format, comes in plain “cafone”, multi-grain, and wholemeal varieties, all fragrant, perfectly leavened and just the right amount of crunch. The Danish rye rugbrød is spectacular, also in a sweet version with chocolate and nuts, as are the ciabatta and baguette for sandwiches. The pizza a pala is very good. The Naples branch is also a food shop.

Legrani

Legrani is carrying out an ambitious project in the centre of Naples, supported by a very beautiful and well-furnished location. The master of the white art is Massimiliano Malafronte, of the eponymous bakery in Gragnano. Legrani is a welcoming place to stay in an elegant setting, but you can also come here to buy bread, there is the particularly fragrant and tasty cereal loaf, spelt loaf, semolina loaf, then the ciabatta ideal for stuffing. Also panuozzi (typical of Gragnano), slices of bauletto, focaccia and Neapolitan saltimbocca of excellent workmanship can be enjoyed stuffed, seated at tables or take away. The food on offer at the tables is enriched by Neapolitan dishes, with a nice list of refined legume soups. Legrani is also a delicatessen with a wide choice of pantry products, sought after among the excellences of Campania. The cafeteria offer is also very well cared for.

Tarallificio Esposito

The Esposito family is the fourth generation of bakers in the lively Sanità district. Their bakery offers a very authentic glimpse of this popular area of Naples that is experiencing a happy moment of rebirth, and it is no coincidence that it is also a point of reference for Neapolitans living in the area, starting in the morning with breakfast preparations including brioche and small pastries. The warm welcome of the bakers, combined with the strong Neapolitan identity that they have maintained in the offer of the breads and everything that is baked, gives moments of pure pleasure. A timeless still-image that is particularly precious and to be treasured, starting with the breads closely linked to traditional formats and the taralli “sugna, pepe e mandorle”, (suet, pepper and almonds) which remain a strong reminder. As well as the Neapolitan panino, the flatbread pizzas and the legendary casatiello, available in family size and in the historic single-portion.
