Merano WineFestival presents itself as a laboratory of ideas for revitalising the sector during a period of profound change. The 2025 edition, scheduled to take place in the South Tyrolean town from 7 to 11 November, is appropriately titled Vision: Wine & Food Creators. Faced with falling consumption and the simultaneous growth of the no-low alcohol segment, Merano launches an appeal to all players in the wine sector to look ahead and “anticipate the transformations affecting the world of wine and taste,” says founder Helmuth Köcher, who calls on the food and wine industry to challenge itself and change pace in response to contemporary challenges.
The proposal on historic vines
In particular, Merano WineFestival proposes to strengthen the link between wine and its territory through a mapping initiative that communicates the identity of Italian wines: “Only by reinforcing the bond between product and territory can Italian wine distinguish itself in increasingly crowded and fragmented markets.” With the aim of constructing a shared narrative around wine, one of the proposals is to highlight on the label—with a dedicated indication—those wines made from at least 60% historic vines over 50 years old, “in order to give value to a unique ampelographic heritage that also shows resilience in the face of climate change.”
The November programme
The five-day event will feature food, wine, beer, and spirits, alongside talks. It will open with TasteTerroir – bio&dynamica, a day dedicated to organic and biodynamic viticulture, Piwi grape varieties, underwater wines, and wines aged in amphorae. From Friday 7 to Monday 10 November, the spotlight will be on the GourmetArena, with food, spirits, and craft beer excellence, accompanied by live showcooking.
The Teatro Puccini will host the WineHunter Award Platinum ceremony, followed by the awarding of the WineHunter Stars. From Saturday 8 to Monday 10, The Festival will take place, featuring Italian and international wine producers. On Tuesday 11, the event will conclude with Catwalk Champagne&More, showcasing the finest national and international méthode traditionnelle sparkling wines.
