Where to eat in Moena, the best restaurants chosen by Gambero Rosso

Dec 18 2023, 17:01
Moena, on the border between Val di Fiemme and Val di Fassa, is called the “fairy of the Dolomites” because at sunrise and sunset, a suggestive game of light tinges the mountain peaks pink, creating fairy-tale scenarios

Thanks to numerous free ski buses departing from the town centre, the Alpe Lusia/San Pellegrino ski resort located just 4 kilometres away, with 23 lifts and 26 kilometres of slopes, which will be open until 7 April 2024, can be reached quickly.

Until January 6th, then, the historical centre of the town is animated by the Christmas Village, with typical wooden houses offering handicrafts, gifts and food and wine specialities. Numerous events are also planned to brighten up the festivities. A local product worth trying is Puzzone di Moena, a PDO cheese to which a Festival is even dedicated, which can be purchased at the Caseificio Sociale. At the table, decisive flavours predominate in dishes featuring local ingredients. Here are the 11 best restaurants.

Chalet Aster

Restaurant. In the heart of the village, inside the hotel of the same name, it is a popular address for holidaymakers. The culinary proposal is based on traditional ingredients and recipes, giving a simple but centred interpretation of the flavours and presentation. Orzotto with apples and Teroldego with slivers of Puzzone di Moena, potato gnocchi with venison ragout, salmon trout fillet with balsamic vinaigrette, and éntrecôte of beef with rocket and Trentingrana. Inevitable, in closing, a slice of homemade strudel. Regional wines are served in the cellar.

Just outside the centre, with ample parking and a well-equipped outdoor seating area, it is a modern building that houses a bar, workshop and e-bike recharging point, positioned at the start of the cycle path that is used as a cross-country skiing track in winter. It is run by Vittorio Dariz, also a chef, with the support of his wife Gabriella and a smart staff. You come here for a coffee with a home-made cake or a break or a full meal punctuated by good dishes prepared by Vittorio himself. Themed lunches and dinners are organised.

Restaurant. A comfortable 4-star hotel in a convenient and quiet location is the setting for the restaurant, which is also open to outside guests under the passionate management of the Schacher family. The kitchen line-up has as its strong point the careful selection of ingredients, as local and locally sourced as possible, but the menu also includes some fish dishes. There is no shortage of fine selections of cured meats and typical cheeses. There are about 300 references on the extensive wine list, and almost all of them from Trentino-Alto Adige.

InAlto Col Margherita

Bistrot. Alfio Ghezzi has climbed to high altitude to bring to Col Margherita, at an altitude of 2,500 metres, the bistrot format that he already proposes at the Mart in Rovereto and the Eala hotel in Limone sul Garda. Up here, one can comfortably arrive by cable car: a comfortable ascent to one of the most panoramic places in the Dolomites. A magnificent territory from which the Trentino chef and resident chef Gianluca Pittigher draws with both hands those ingredients that sublimate in the dishes, moving with elegance between tradition and modernity. Here, chef Paolo Donei has for many years been proposing his very personal version of cuisine, a proposal that is all substance, flavour and refinement, based on the vegetables and herbs from his own garden and on ingredients selected with wisdom above all from local producers.
