Tre Bicchieri 2026, the best wines of Piedmont awarded by Gambero Rosso

Nebbiolo, in its many different expressions, remains the most awarded grape variety, followed by Barbera, but it is also worth highlighting the growing demand and supply of white wines

In every corner of the world, when people speak of Italian wine, Piedmont is essential. Its hills are home to appellations and wineries that have written the history of Italian winemaking — especially when it comes to red wines. The region is synonymous with Barbera and its many great interpreters, but it also means Barolo, Barbaresco, and Nebbiolo in general, with wineries such as Conterno and Gaja, which have become true icons of our country.

Piedmont’s white wines: growing demand and supply

Without committing an act of heresy, we can at least venture to say that the region’s white wines seem finally ready to awaken from the slumber in which they have long basked. The total number of awarded white wines remains at around 20% of all regional Tre Bicchieri, including sparkling wines — so Piedmont’s reds can rest easy.

What now contributes to giving Piedmont’s whites greater visibility is the simultaneous growth in both demand and production, which has led producers to reconsider their technical and philosophical approach to this style.

Today, there is an unprecedented attention paid to white wines, even when compared with those produced in other Italian regions. All appellations — both the historic and the more recently prestigious ones — have now reached an enviably high average quality level.

Gavi confirms its four Tre Bicchieri from last year, but above all, looks to the future with many new labels ready to replace or accompany them. The Timorasso from the Colli Tortonesi repeats its excellent result from the Vini d’Italia 2025 guide, while Roero Arneis places three wines at the highest level.

Nebbiolo confirmed as the most awarded grape variety

As for the reds, Nebbiolo, in its numerous expressions, remains the most awarded grape, thanks also to the concurrence of several outstanding vintages.

Recently, however, its growing area has expanded eastwards — no longer limited to Langa, Roero, and Alto Piemonte, but now including the Asti and Casale Monferrato areas, with appellations such as Albugnano DOC (in the province of Asti) and Monferrato Nebbiolo DOC (in the provinces of Asti and Alessandria).

Barbera remains at excellent levels

We also note, with great satisfaction, that Barbera, the most widespread and popular of Piedmont’s varieties — despite its many contradictions, including certain difficulties in clearing stock — continues to perform well, with 11 Tre Bicchieri, all divided between the provinces of Asti and Alessandria.

The new entries

Finally, as further proof of the sector’s vitality, it is worth highlighting that 9 out of 77 wineries have earned Tre Bicchieri for the first time:
Orlando Abrigo, Bera, Davide Carlone, La Casaccia, Cascina Baricchi, Davide Cavelli, Mandirola, Mura Mura, and Pelassa.
