On the red wine front, once again this year the lion's share belongs to the western denominations, with Valpolicella and its Amarone leading the way. As many as twelve were awarded in the Gambero Rosso Vini d'Italia 2023 guide, produced by companies that over the decades have given new identity to the historic Veronese red wine, researching and achieving aromatic finesse and taste tension. Here, too, a new awareness emerges, with authentic wines, where technique enhances the link with the terroir and does not chase a winning model, with the drying process linked to Amarone and almost disappeared from the most interesting Valpolicella Superiore wines. The terroir also plays a leading role with grapes of international nature, with Bordeaux from the Euganean and Berici hills contrasting with those from the province of Treviso, with the former richer and sunnier and the latter playing more on elegance and tension.
