Negotiations with the United States are still ongoing, ahead of the announcement—scheduled for Friday, 1 August—of the first list of products exempted from the 15% tariffs

US-EU negotiations on tariffs are continuing, following the agreement reached in Scotland during the meeting between US President Donald Trump and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. A general agreement has been reached on 15% tariffs, and diplomatic efforts are now focused on studying and securing exemptions. The wine and spirits sector remains hopeful, but for now, as a spokesperson for the European Commission has stated, “there are currently no exemptions for wine and spirits.” A cold shower for the sector, which risks significant losses.

Wine and spirits excluded from the first group

“The Commission,” stated Brussels, in a position reiterated by news agency Ansa during a press conference on Thursday, 31 July, “remains committed to achieving and securing the maximum number of exemptions, including for traditional products such as wine and spirits.” However, the same spokesperson clarified that “we do not expect wine and spirits to be included in the first group of exemptions to be announced by the United States tomorrow. Therefore,” the statement concludes, “this sector, like all other economic sectors, will be subject to the 15 percent tariff.”
