Launched last year, the Rare Wines List returns in the Gambero Rosso Vini d’Italia 2026 guide — a section dedicated to wines produced in no more than 3,000 units (with very few exceptions related to wines born in particularly extreme and unique contexts), which for us are worth as much as the Tre Bicchieri: they tell stories of risk, vision, and infinite patience. Not just numbers, but radical choices and creative intuitions that raise the bar — often becoming styles and benchmarks in their own right. Some of these bottles are very hard to find, but not all. Enjoy the thrill of tracking them down in online shops, through your trusted wine merchant, or directly from the wineries themselves.
Rare Wines. What characteristics must they have
A Rare Wine is a product conceived and crafted with an artisanal approach, produced in limited or extremely limited quantities (in the list below, some labels do not exceed 600 bottles, and in two cases only 500 and 300!).
However, rarity is not merely a question of numbers. What makes rare wines unique and fascinating is the message encapsulated within the bottle. The labels we have chosen share a common thread: behind each lies a risk, a stylistic shift, a desire to push boundaries and test limits. Experimentation and innovation coexist, yet there are also virtuous examples that revive traditional practices, reinterpreting them for the present.
This year, we have selected 50 wines from North to South of our Peninsula — bottles to collect in the cellar, but also to sip slowly and share with fellow enthusiasts who, in a glass of wine, seek uniqueness.
Red wines dominate the list in number, followed by whites, but it also includes one Cerasuolo, three sparkling wines, and seven meditation sweet wines — a category often overlooked by the market, yet home to some truly outstanding labels.
Rare Wines in tasting in Rome
Among the Rare Wines we have selected (you will be able to taste them during the great Tre Bicchieri tasting on 12 October at the Roma Convention Center La Nuvola) are both prestigious, world-renowned denominations and lesser-known appellations — wines produced in very different ways, yet all sharing a special connection with their territory and the people who interpret it. This is the red thread that unites them.
Discovering them means embarking on a journey guided by curiosity and excellence.
In the coming weeks, we will introduce you, one by one, to the stories behind the bottles we list below.
