Description

VINEYARD | Not even one hectare in Le Secche, from which the wine takes its name, which Massimo Piccin, a well-known face in the wine world for Podere Sapaio, decided to bottle with pride and passion. Located in the northwest of Isola del Giglio, near the Fenaio lighthouse. To be precise, we are talking about 7,000 metres of vineyards with plants (mainly ansonica and other native varieties such as biancone) which are mostly over 60 years old. This is veritable heroic viticulture that takes into account the whole landscape, starting with the recovery of the dry stone walls, restored over the years. In 2019 4,000 metres of vineyard recovered from the maquis were added (partly using nursery materials and partly mass selection of existing vineyards). The training system is alberello gigliese and partly espalier and, for now, only 700 bottles are produced. When fully operational, production will reach 1,500 and no more: a truly rare wine.

THE PERSON | A Venetian engineer with a great passion for wine, Massimo Piccin arrived in Bolgheri in the year 2000 by purchasing the farm in the Bolgheri countryside. Today in total he has 16 hectares of Bolgheri Doc and 9 of Igt. Producer of great sensitivity and success, he exports his wine all over the world on the strength of the glory that Bolgheri boasts today. His reference wines are Volpolo, Doc Bolgheri Rosso and Sapaio Igt. He discovered Isola del Giglio in the spring of 2015. He fell in love with it and bought the first vineyard at Le Secche, followed by land at Bacarinello for a total of about 1.5 hectares, even if not yet fully operational. From this he produces a particular and fascinating wine, the true fruit of the island and of the area from which it is generated.THE WINE | The first vintage was 2015, here we present the 2020, currently on the market. The vinification takes place in an open container in contact with the skins and a part of the stem. Once the fermentation is over, it is drawn off and then it is aged for about ten months in ceramic clayver. Then a short time in the bottle before being put on the market. As soon as it is poured in the glass, it immediately reveals a lot, thanks to its rich, intense and fascinating colour which changes from golden yellow to orange tones. The nose is astounding: brackish and intense, it suggests sunlight and the strength of the rock. Slowly enveloping and iridescent aromas emerge: initially citrus, then dehydrated fruit and more maquis, Mediterranean herbs, noble resins, sweet spices. The enthusiasm of the true but full of vigour wine in the glass never changes. The mouth is persistent, dynamic. The salt notes accompany the sip and push the wine towards a deep, tasty, full finish.
