"When the Moretti Polegato family acquired Borgo Conventi, the winery had been a renowned producer for more than 40 years, producing white and red Collio wines," says the winemaker for Borgo Conventi.
While Borgo Conventi enjoyed a good reputation since its foundation in 1975, its acquisition by Villa Sandi owner the Moretti Polegato family in April 2019 took this estate in Collio to new heights.
"Arriving in Collio, a territory new to the family, they have worked in harmony with it following and respecting the rhythms of an extraordinary land," the winemaker continues.
Soil and the Moon
The first wine the family made from Tenuta Borgo Conventi was its Collio Bianco Luna di Ponca.
"As soon as they acquired Borgo Conventi they felt the urge to create a completely new wine imparting to it their approach to the Collio area. After having focused on single-varietal whites, the new stimulating challenge was to produce a Collio Bianco – a blend of Friulano, Chardonnay and Malvasia. A wine designed to embody identity, contemporary style, a strong sense of place, and global appeal. This vision has come to life in Luna di Ponca," says the winemaker.
"The three different grapes are harvested separately on different days, vinified using distinct techniques, and aged partly in stainless steel and partly in wood," they continue. "Each of the resulting wines conveys the salinity and minerality of the Ponca soil — the ancient seabed, rich in minerals from prehistoric seas, which are dissolved by rainwater and transferred by the vines into the grapes, and ultimately into the wine — making it a truly unique sensory experience."

That Ponca soil is what gives the wine part of its name. As for 'Luna', that reference is in recognition of both how the Moon "deeply affects nature and agriculture and to the Astronomical Observatory based next to the winery on the same earth made of marn and sandstone typical of Ponca giving the wines their typical and unique identity."
Each constituent grape variety adds a different characteristic to the final blend.
"Friulano imparts territorial expression, Chardonnay brings international touch, and Malvasia provides structure, character and varietal identity."
Tasting notes for Luna di Ponca include citrus, flowers, biscuit, bread and ripe apple.
Tre Bicchieri
The 2021 vintage of Luna di Ponca won the distinction of Tre Bicchieri, the highest accolade, in the recently-launched 2026 edition of Gambero Rosso's Vini d'Italia guide.

"Every accolade earned by any Collio wine is a recognition to the uniqueness of this territory and the wines its ability to express terroir. Tre Bicchieri is an internationally-recognised award with global visibility which we are very proud of," concludes the winemaker.
