From the classic and essential lemon gelato (best if from Sorrento) to the tarallo flavour, from Vesuvian apricot to the timeless fiordilatte. Here are the best gelaterias in Naples and its province

There’s the gelateria specialising in citrus flavours (around twenty, in fact), those that focus on less traditional combinations, and even one of the best-known dairies in the area – where tasting the fiordilatte is a must. Here are the top gelaterias in Naples and surroundings.

The best gelaterias in Naples and its province

Buonocore

Speaking of overtourism, even Capri is no longer an exception. That’s why historical and reliable addresses – real institutions of island taste – are even more precious. Since the 1950s, Buonocore has been a delicatessen, fry shop, and now a pastry and gelato shop. A must-visit stop, with guaranteed top-quality ingredients, artisanal processes, and friendly staff. The gelato selection, all well displayed and inviting, offers a good balance between “creamy” and fruit-based options: we loved the lemon, and the mulberry flavour is highly recommended. A special touch: the cone or cup-shaped wafer is freshly made. The pastries are also excellent, with a solid gluten-free and vegan offering.

Landolfo – Gelato Artigianale

This gelateria in the main square of Grumo Nevano is particularly well-kept and pleasant. Its reputation draws artisanal gelato lovers from nearby towns and beyond. Brothers Vittorio and Davide Landolfo, dressed in immaculate white coats, come across as true professionals. You’ll find a wide range of flavours, both creamy and sorbet-style, many of which follow the seasons, with a strong emphasis on promoting local produce. Each month they introduce a new flavour, always well received. Don’t miss the apricot stracciatella or the successful walnut and fig combination. They don’t always adhere strictly to posted opening hours.

Gasparotto

A recent addition in Lacco Ameno, a small and charming town on the Island of Ischia. One-way ticket Milan–Ischia for Gianmarco and Raffaella (she’s from Ischia), who have poured their passion into this gem: an artisanal gelateria, proudly “natural”, with the bonus of being entirely gluten- and lactose-free. There are also spreads and baked goods for breakfast and snacks. Determination and creativity shine through in their transparent and light-hearted communication. Creams, fruits, and local shopping thanks to a network of excellent local suppliers. This deserves recognition: tourist hotspots need quality now more than ever. Among local apricots, lemons, and “percoche” peaches, there are also vegan options. As they say, “it’s gelato for everyone.” Gianmarco’s Milanese accent adds charm to the island.

Ikigai

Reason for living. That’s the philosophy of owner Marco Casa and the meaning of “Ikigai”, in Japanese. This gelateria and sorbet shop in Monticchio, a small hamlet of Massa Lubrense, strongly highlights local ingredients, of which there are many and they’re delicious. Not just gelato and sorbet; there’s also a modern pastry selection, including cakes and leavened treats. Among the gelatos, we loved the dark chocolate and the pistachio – its pale, muted colour says a lot about its quality. The salted caramel and Speculoos flavours are incredibly indulgent. Excellent sorbets too, such as the sheep ricotta one, and in summer, mulberry. The shop is beautifully maintained, and the cups are ceramic, specially designed for the gelateria.

Gay Odin

The historic Neapolitan chocolate shop has also entered the gelato world, with the same professionalism and refinement that has always defined its brand. Several locations around Naples, but the one on Via Benedetto Croce, in the city's oldest area, next to the Santa Chiara convent, is the best stocked. Around twenty flavours, well divided between creams and sorbets. Unsurprisingly, chocolate is featured in multiple convincing versions: Black Forest, “ghianda” (acorn), dark with Criollo cocoa nibs, and rum chocolate. Also try the sorbets, all intense, as well as the hazelnut flavour.

Poppella

Stylish design and décor that evoke youth and cheerfulness. Located right next to the famous namesake pastry shop in the Sanità district, now hugely popular among both Neapolitans and tourists. The attention to detail is evident and inviting, just like the gelato itself. Classic flavours, but also continuous novelties to spark curiosity. There are nods to Neapolitan culture, like the tarallo flavour – the Poppella family actually began with this local street food. Original options include wine and “percoca” peach, or Neapolitan pastiera. The fruit sorbets are delicate and worth trying.

Pasticceria Celestina

Elegant and dreamy, Nancy Sannino’s tea room is a soft, ethereal space where you can enjoy her artisanal gelatos, either in a cup or cone. Flavours that linger in memory due to the purity of the ingredients, directly evoking the essence of fruit or other produce. The sugar levels are subdued – no pandering or compromise here. A small selection of about ten flavours, all excellent and full-bodied. Fruit sorbets are delicate and seasonal: try the Vesuvian apricot (in season), passion fruit, and mango. Creams are also delicious – outstanding hazelnut and pistachio, and unforgettable 80% dark chocolate, milk-free, a bold move for lovers of pure, rich flavours. Nancy is an excellent pastry chef, so the brioche served with gelato is of the highest quality and uniquely delicious.

Gabbiano

Salvatore Gabbiano is a true artisan. In the centre of Pompeii, he’s a go-to for sweet lovers, locals and beyond. A welcoming and refined setting with nods to Pompeii’s history, including pastry offerings. You can enjoy treats at the counter or at a table: gelato, pastries, and baked goods. Though better known for pastries, his gelato is excellent too. A limited but expertly crafted selection, ranging from traditional creams to fruit sorbets made with seasonal produce, often sourced from the Vesuvius National Park. Milk-based gelatos are a must – we tried the fiordilatte, made with Cilento milk. Expect flavours like Vesuvian black mulberries, and even the option of pairing gelato with outstanding leavened products.

Tutto Gelato

The quality of this gelateria’s offerings has steadily grown, making it a key reference in the area – and beyond. The Raiola family has been in the business for over thirty years, with a keen sense of how to keep up with and anticipate trends. Loyal regulars and many new customers of all ages. Around thirty flavours, many featuring certified traditional products, such as excellent Ciaculli mandarin, Vesuvian apricot, Sorrento lemon, Modica chocolate, Guatemalan coffee, Dominican coconut, and more. Strong focus on sugar-free, gluten-free, and lactose-free options, without compromising flavour. Try the granitas, and note the top-quality fresh whipped cream. The “Tronchetto di Carletto” is a highly sought-after signature item: hazelnut and sour cherry gelato coated with crunchy praline almonds.

Raki

A gelateria that quickly made a name for itself in Sorrento thanks to its delicious gelato and innovative flavours. Subtle sweetness, allowing the ingredients to shine. Unusual flavours worth trying include mascarpone, pine nuts and caramel, pineapple and basil, figs, almonds, and bay leaf. Don’t miss the Sorrento lemon and Ciaculli mandarin gelatos. The wafer and whipped cream are of excellent quality. The original shop is small, while the new one on Corso Italia 96 is spacious, with seating. Gluten-free, vegan, and sugar-free options are also available.

I Giardini di Cataldo

In the heart of Sorrento lies a historic citrus grove, I Giardini di Cataldo – an enchanting place open to visitors. Dating back to the early 1800s, it was originally used to grow citrus fruits sold as Sorrentine specialities. There was also a thriving export market. Here, Salvatore Esposito and his efficient, passionate team share the story of the grove and their production methods. The gelateria has been a highlight for about twenty-five years: artisanal gelatos to enjoy at the tables, on the go in cones or cups, or sold by weight. Citrus flavours are their speciality – lemon, orange, mandarin – with about twenty different types, from fruit sorbets to creamy blends. You’ll also find traditional liqueurs, including limoncello and others made with citrus, as well as excellent marmalades.

Cremeria Gabriele

A benchmark for quality gelato across Campania. The Cuomo family is well known for associating their name with the joy of excellent gelato. Originally cheesemakers from Vico Equense – famous for its fresh dairy – they continue to offer a well-curated cheese selection alongside the gelato counter, a delicious blend of traditions. Always packed with customers, the space reflects their dedication. Wide range of flavours and gelato cakes. Located on the Sorrento coast, don’t miss the lemon sorbet or fiordilatte; the hazelnut and chocolate flavours are also superb. The gelato-filled brioche is a beloved classic, often paired with their top-tier whipped cream. People come to Gabriele for a globally known staple: the lemon “delizia”, a sponge cake base with a delicate and flavourful cream made of Sorrento lemons and whipped cream.
