Review

We find the Mazzi family’s winery in the small village of San Peretto. Renovated a few years ago, the building is situated by a 16th-century water mill and overlooks a historic courtyard. The vineyards unfold in the Negrar valley, less than 10 hectares dedicated mostly to traditional grapes which give rise to an elegant and but never excessively opulent range. Antonio and Stefano Mazzi have managed to give their parents’ winery a modern profile while remaining faithful to tradition. The excellent Amarone Punta di Villa ’16 features aromas that gravitate around ripe cherry, enlivened by fine herbs and a soft mineral nuance. In the mouth its fullness is evident, but it’s well governed by supporting acidity and a close-knit weave of smooth tannins. The Sanperetto, still one of the most interesting Valpolicella Superiores, also delivered, and the 2018 didn’t fail to make the weight of its class felt.
