Sergio Castellani oversees the winery founded by Michele immediately after WW II. What used to be a small space for making wine has become a full-fledged cellar that houses all stages of production and maturation in oak barrels. The winery is located in Valgatara, down in the Marano valley, while the vineyards extend over several plots between the plains and surrounding hills near the winery, and the area of Maso, in Negrar. Some are owned, while others are rented but managed directly, making for a range with an energetic style. This year they submitted a smaller lineup, only the wines from their I Castei line. The Amarone Campo Casalin ’18 stood out. On the nose its aromas appear dark, still veiled, with super-ripe red fruit leaving limited space for notes of undergrowth, sensations that reemerge on a full palate well supported by tannins. The Ripasso Costamaran ’19, on the other hand, expresses sweet red fruit, almost jammy, proving even more approachable and juicy on the palate.
