Deeply rooted in Fumane, Franco Scamperle's winery today boasts an estate spanning around twenty hectares in Valpolicella Classica, with production dedicated almost exclusively to the appellation's wines. The vineyards are situated in some of the best positions, such as the Conca d'Oro in Sant'Ambrogio, the Masua in San Floriano, and Ca' Carnocchio in Fumane, where both their Guyot-trained vines and the more traditional pergolas are grown side-by-side. La Marega and Pergole Vece, both 2018s, are the house's two Amarones. The former is all about explosive sweet and fruity aromas, which we also find on a palate of good tension. The latter, however, proves more compact and darker on the nose, with cherry and spice notes slightly overshadowed by the nuances of oak. In tasting, however, it's the power that takes center stage, and the wine impresses with its softness and compactness.
