For the decorated citizen Francesco Tornatore, launching a winery on Etna marked a joyful return to his roots: indeed, his father was a well-known local farmer who, besides wine and oil, also cultivated citrus fruits and arable crops on the Trimarchisa estate, in Castiglione di Sicilia. Francesco, having taken over the estate, immediately expanded the vineyard by acquiring old vines and planting new ones, particularly carricante (a varietal that's far less common than nerello on Etna's northern slope). The fact that two wines made it into our final round of tastings gives you an idea of the winery's excellent bill of health. Indeed, Tornatore is one of Etna's most representative producers, both for its exceptional quality and for the extraordinary value for money that their range offers. The Etna Rosso Pietrarizzo '20 lands Tre Bicchieri, unveiling a bouquet of rare complexity and elegance, evoking smoky mineral hints, wild berries, dark citrus, violet, and yellow peach. The palate is delicious and long, nicely balancing fruit and soft tannins before an incredible balsamic finish.
