Review

Gaetano Tobin, who left us suddenly this past summer, managed to develop two production tracks that distinguished and complemented each other. On the one hand the large Monteforte cooperative is a high-quality winery in its own right, on the other it makes wines to be sold to other bottlers. The large area cultivated allows for the rigorous selection of grapes. Production centers on Soave Classico, but makes room for other Verona appellations as well, such as Valpolicella and Lessinia (an increasingly interesting area for sparkling wines). The Soave Castellaro ’19 was just a step away from top marks. It’s a wine with a faint but very broad nose, where ripe fruit gradually gives way to dried flowers, Mediterranean scrub and a faint presence of oak. In the mouth it reflects the same style, wrought more of harmony than pluck, coming through long and juicy. The Soave Clivus ’20, rather, is fresh and immediate—an exhilarating drink.
