Santadi has been a stalwart in the Sulcis region ever since the 1960s. Still, it took a significant leap forward thanks to Antonello Pilloni, its current president. It was he who wanted to involve Giacomo Tachis, a visionary in Italian winemaking, si as to elevate the region's primary grape, carignano, to its current status. Since then, the winery's quality trajectory has been ever-upward. The wines tell the story of Sulcis through old vines cultivated in sandy soils, primarily focusing on reds, with a touch of cannonau, as well as small plots of vermentino, nasco, and nuragus. The Terre Brune continues to solidify its reputation as one of the island's great reds and, with the 2019 vintage, manages to blend finesse and drinkability in a full-bodied wine with character and structure. The aromas conjure up Sulcis, with its underbrush scents and brackish touches. The palate is pervasive, mouthfilling, yet also deep and smooth. Its lesser-known siblings, which are more varied in structure rather than inferior in quality, are also delicious: the Grotta Rosso proves fresh, vibrant, and juicy, while the Rocca Rubia is more potent but remains a delightful drink.
