Review

In recent years, the Borin family’s winery has shifted its viticultural center of gravity from the Monticelli plains to the higher hills around Arquà, making for an increasingly interesting viticultural project. In the cellar in Via dei Colli all stages of production are overseen by Francesco, who has the valuable support of his father, Gianni, while Gianpaolo deals mainly with the commercial side of things. A broad portfolio ranges from approachably pleasant wines to more complex and multifaceted reserves. The Zuan ’18, a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc (with Merlot just slightly dominating), pours a vibrant, vivid ruby red. Closed at first, the wine opens quickly on notes of ripe red fruit embellished by medicinal herbs and hints of forest undergrowth. The palate is full and juicy, well governed by sweet, smooth tannins. The Syrah Coldivalle ’19 is generous and immediate in its aromas, dynamic and gratifying on the palate.
