Grandi Salumifici Italiani

Description

The business began with Peter Ferdinand Senfter who started artisan speck production in a San Candido butcher, for local consumption in Val Pusteria, using his own animals. In the early 20th century the Senfter butcher business became the official supplier of the imperial Hapsburg court. By the 1960s it was a real industry and in 1981 it divided into butcher and charcuterie. The company began exporting to Germany and the plant was renovated before the turning point came in 2001, when the Senfter group and the Emilian cooperative Unibon created Grandi Salumifici Italiani Spa, with head offices in Modena. Senfter products include Alto Adige PGI speck, smoked Prague ham, and frankfurters, but the group (also a leader in ready meals) includes cured meat brands like Casa Modena, Parmigiani, Cavazzuti, Alcisa, and Gruppo Alimentare in Toscana (PGI Finocchiona).
