When we say tuna, we immediately think of Callipo, the classic brand created in 1913 and renowned for the quality of its preserves, especially tuna in oil. The company uses the widespread yellowfin tuna, fished in the Atlantic and Indian oceans, frozen on board and processed in the Maierato plant, but also the increasingly rare Mediterranean bluefin. Products are bottled by hand. The company also offers botargo, anchovies, tuna belly, salmon, and mackerel, all of an excellent standard despite the large production quantities. The Callipo group includes Gelateria Callipo, which continues the Pizzo ice-cream tradition with products based on heritage recipes. Recently, this Maierato producer introduced a new line of preserves dedicated to the flavors and traditions of Calabria: marmalades made with citrus fruit, figs or pomegranate; compote of red onion, peperoncini or green tomatoes; bottled nduja di Spilinga (a spicy condiment); honey.
