The gently undulating territory that surrounds the southern shore of Lake Garda has always been home to Turbiana, but the clay-dominated soils that emerge as you approach the large basin are also interesting for cultivating Merlot. Inspired by this very idea, Carla Prospero’s winery has become one of the most notable producers operating in the area today. Headquartered in a beautiful cellar in Sansonina, the winery gives rise to a range marked by solidity and character. The Sansonina, a 2018 monovarietal Merlot, is increasingly convincing, offering up aromas of ripe, meaty fruit that captivate for their clarity, focus and integrity. A succession of spices and flowers follow, lending a touch of freshness. In the mouth it’s generous, powerful, enlivened by acidity and pleasantly rough tannins. The Lugana Fermentazione Spontanea ’19, made with grapes from an old vineyard, stood out for its aromatic complexity and sapidity.
