Tre Bicchieri: Lombardy in rosé

Lombardy is rosé wine country (and you can say that twice)! This year's tastings mark a national record, both in terms of rosé stills and sparklers: wines that play on finesse, with subtly whispered, airy and multifaceted textures. No less than seven Tre Bicchieri were rosés, with two masterpieces: the two special awards we talk about below.

The new Tre Bicchieri of Lombardy

Lombardy is experiencing a moment of great dynamism, just look at the number of new wines awarded (much higher here than anywhere else). Indeed, there are six new members to the club. When it comes to Valtènesi, we welcome Avanzi, with the RGC Valtènesi Chiaretto Antitesi '21. In Franciacorta we recommend Mirabella, with their Franciacorta Dosaggio Zero Døm Riserva '15. For the first time a wine from the Capriano del Colle appellation earned our highest score—we're talking about the Bianco Fausto '21, produced by young Davide Lazzari, who managed a delicious version from trebbiano. Moving on to Oltrepò Pavese, we celebrate two new entries: Isimbarda delivers with the Riesling Renano Vigna Martina Le Fleur '20, while in terms of reds, Cordero crossed the finish line with the Pinot Nero dell'Oltrepò Pavese Tiamat '20. Finally, we move to the province of Sondrio, with the new Tenuta Scerscé (managed by the young Cristina Scarpellini) and their Valtellina Sup. Inferno Flammante '19. Of the region's 30 Tre Bicchieri, 15 are metodo classicos, confirming its dominant position nationally. We close with a curiosity: in Franciacorta, a territory par excellence for white grapes, there is more and more talk of pinot nero and the blanc de noirs being on the rise; in Oltrepò, the cradle of pinot nero, we tasted several new blanc de blancs. Just goes to show, the grass is always greener...

Special awards Italian Wines 2023. Sparking Wine of the Year

Our Sparkler of the Year award goes to a sumptuous Franciacorta, Mosnel's Pas Dosé Parosé '16, a cuvée that reveals superior mouthfeel in a pure, spicy and fruity profile—a true champion.

Special awards Italian Wines 2023. Rosé of the Year

The Rosé of the Year takes us to the shores of Lake Garda, in a rapidly growing area: Valtènesi. Here the vineyards, mostly groppello, are mainly east-facing, taking in the morning light, making for grapes of rare harmony and poise, qualities that describe Pasini San Giovanni's RGC Valtènesi Chiaretto Lettera C '20. It manages to express a weightless complexity of flavor amidst whiffs of citrus and balsamic hints.
