Tre Bicchieri 2020 Preview. The 74 best wines of Piemonte

Previews of Gambero Rosso Vini d'Italia 2020 guide continue. Today it’s the turn of Piemonte.

Tre Bicchieri 2020 Piemonte. Nebbiolo

In the name Nebbiolo, the protagonist of as many as 46 award-winning labels, are: 26 Barolos, 13 Barbarescos, 3 Roero and 4 reds from Alto Piemonte. These numbers are the result of the combination of excellent vintages––see for example the Barolo 2013 reserves or the Barbaresco of the fantastic 2016 grape harvest––enhanced by an increasingly careful viticulture. In the coming years the rich Langa of Barolo, and partly also of Barbaresco, will have to face a difficult struggle, against a devious opponent: its own success.

Overall, there are 74 Tre Bicchieri in the region. We note with great pleasure that even the subalpine whites are present, as well as a good number of vines, long and wrongly considered minor, and are beginning to reach a certain international reputation.

Tre Bicchieri 2020 Piemonte. Whites

Eight dry whites have reached the highest achievement, from north to south: Erbaluce in the lake and foothills of Caluso and Ivrea; the Cortese that shines in Gavi, a border area between Piedmont and Liguria; the Timorasso del Tortonese, which has quickly become an absolute must, and finally Arneis, now the undisputed king of Roero. Without forgetting the moscato bianco, a grape that's as special as it is mistreated, and which the world envies us. Even with cold and rainy climate, 2018 did not offer particular peaks as far as the Moscato d’Asti.

Tre Bicchieri 2020 Piemonte. Bubbles

In the milieu of Classic Method, Piemonte is fielding an impressive impact force, which finds strength in the long history of the Canellese area and in the undoubted peculiarities of the areas of Valle Belbo and Valle Bormida. Finally freed from a self-imposed yoke, Alta Langa is now becoming a denomination of absolute qualitative value and very trendy.

Tre Bicchieri 2020 Piemonte. The two souls of Monferrato

We conclude by talking about Monferrato, which in its westernmost part is a land of very great Barbera wines able to give great immediate pleasures and able to challenge time. In its eastern portion, on the other hand, we are witnessing the rebirth of a grape and a wine until recently forgotten by the public, the Grignolino. Once worthy of gracing the tables of local nobles for its innate class, the Grignolino now finds its old glories with three award-winning labels that also confirm its longevity.

Tre Bicchieri 2020 Piemonte. The new Tre Bicchieri winners

In closing, we welcome the wineries that for the first time garnered the Tre Bicchieri recognition: Garesio, Fortemasso, Ada Nada, Cascina delle Rose and Platinetti.
