Local&Global: kids, farmers and world citizens at Marcigliana

Oct 6 2017, 14:00 | by Livia Montagnoli

A Sunday of playfulness, fine food, farming culture and cultural exchange. The latest project promoted by ABC lands at Riserva Naturale della Marcigliana, in the countryside just outside of Rome. With it come kids scampering in the fields to teach them how to eat in more healthy fashion, and discover world cuisine.

ABC, the value of trade

ABC: Bambini, Alimentazione, Culture – Italian for Children, Nutrition and Cultures. Plural and Capitalized. It’s better to eat at the table together, and food – its origin, history of production and cultural traditions – can be a powerful communication vehicle, even when spoken in different languages. Hence the birth of Associazione ABC, a project by Catia Sulpizi founded on the value of knowledge and trade through nutrition. Children have an ability to look beyond differences. With curiosity they are receptive to stimuli. Through playtime, these stimuli can be activated. Cooking workshops and interdisciplinary initiatives – like the ABC of Enos that worked in partnership with Dominga Cotarella and the Falesco brand – ABC organizes play and learning activities for kids 5 and older. Many of these take kids back to the soil, in the countryside and its products. Sunday, October 8th will be for the event “Bambini Contadini Cittadini del Mondo”, hosted in the Riserva Naturale della Marcigliana, just outside of Rome.

Local&Global at Marcigliana

A day in the countryside for kids and parents, attending workshops, tastings and farmsteads to purchase local products, practical and hands-on lessons, an exceptional Sunday lunch cooked by chef Salvatore Tassa of prized restaurant Colline Ciociare in Acuto, and the cooks of Indian and Turkish communities.  The event will open at Tenuta Antiqua, where children can become farmers for the day under the slogan “Think Globally, grow Locally”. The day is also an opportunity to gather many different peoples. Rome is a densely populated city as far as foreigners. Showcasing food in its many cultural variations is like travelling the world in a dish. Products at Marcigliana will be supplied by Lazio producers. History too will be addressed, as well as the evolution of the various food cultures over the course of time until 1 p.m. Sunday. Cultural integration workshops will showcase spices from India and cultivations methods belonging to China. At lunchtime, the menu will be in tune with the event’s mission, offering a menu that will include all-Italian snack food par excellence bread and olive oil, as well as Middle Eastern kofte. At 3 p.m. classes start again after lunch, while grown ups can attend tastings offered by Coldiretti and Falesco. Free admission but with mandatory reservations via email. There’s a free shuttle service departing piazza della Repubblica at 9 a.m.
